Garden Planning #2

It’s been two weeks since I last started seeds and we’ve now hit the 8 week mark (8 weeks until frost free). The stock, craspedia and snapdragons that I planted two weeks ago are doing great!

Last weekend I planted the following (instructions say to plant 7-8 or 6-8 weeks prior to frost free date):

Chinese Forget Me-Not from Johnny’s Seeds

Lightly cover seeds and place in a dark room, as darkness is needed for germination. Transplant into cell packs or larger containers when first true leaves appear. Harden off and plant outdoors after last fronts. Germination 5-8 Days at 65-70 degrees. Space 9-12″ apart. Full sun to shade in moderate, well-drained soil. Harvest when 1/2 florets are open.

QIS Carmine & Strawberry Fields Gomphrena from Johnny’s Seeds

Transplant recommended. Keep soil surface moist. Transplant to cell packs or larger containers about 3 weeks after sowing. Transplant out after danger of frost is past. Direct seeding is not recommended. Germination 5-14 days. Spacing 6-8″ apart. No pinching or support necessary. Harvest: (fresh) when flowers are in color but before fully open (dried) allow flowers to open completely and hang to dry.

Apricot/Peach Mix Strawflower from Johnny’s Seeds

Do not cover seed as light aids in germination. Bottom water or mist to avoid covering seeds. Transplant to cell packs or larger containers when first true leaves appear. Harden off and transplant after danger of frost has passed. Spacing 10-12″ apart. May require some support. Harvesting increasing yields. Harvest: (fresh) cut when 2-3 layers of petals have unfolded but before flowers are fully open (dried) hang to dry.

Aster from Burpee

This aster provides a striking mix of colors—white, pink, purple and shades in between. Start indoors and transplant when they’re about 3″ tall. Attracts butterflies.
